SoCa Center Kick-Off
Fall 2023
In October 2023, SoCa was excited to launch with a Kick-Off Event at Weill Cornell Medicine. Attendees included representatives from all three of SoCa’s organizations as well as community stakeholders and collaborators.
Washington Heights Roundtable
Summer 2024
In June 2024, SoCa hosted a Community Roundtable at Columbia University. Residents of Washington Heights were invited to attend the roundtable and participate in table discussions on what Social Capital looks like in their neighborhood. Members of the SoCa Linking Group attended as well and shared feedback with the Career Enhancement Core.
Murals4Change Project Launch
Fall 2024
In November 2024 SoCa launched the Murals4Change Project in collaboration with Groundswell, an organization that leads youth art projects across NYC. Participating students will immerse themselves in a collective mural project that uplifts a specific NYC community. Students will design an artwork that depicts a clear vision for the future.
South Bronx Roundtable
Winter 2024
In December 2024, SoCa hosted a Community Roundtable in the South Bronx. SoCa collaborated with one of our Linking Group partners, WHEDco, and hosted the evening at WHEDco’s Bronx Music Hall. Residents of the South Bronx were invited to attend and participate in table discussions on Social Capital looks like in their neighborhood.
CARES4You STEM Day
Spring 2025
In March 2025, the CARES4You team hosted a special STEM Day event for NYC public middle school students at Weill Cornell Medicine. WCM and Meyer Cancer Center trainees guided students through different interactive activities to introduce them to STEM fields.
American Society of Preventive Oncology Meeting
Spring 2025
Several SoCa members attended the 49th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Preventive Oncology (ASPO) in Philadelphia, including pilot PIs Dr. Shadi Azam and Dr. Alia Komsany. Both of our esteemed PIs presented their work during the poster sessions. Dr. Azam was selected for the 2025 Outstanding Poster Award by the Disparities and Survivorship Special Interest Group for her study titled “The Impact of Social Drivers of Health on Delayed Time to Breast Cancer Surgery”.
Murals4Change Paint Day
Spring 2025
In Fall 2024 the CARES4You project partnered up with Groundswell on their Murals4Change Program. Since then the students at the Gotham Professional Arts Academy have finalized their mural design and participated in a paint day. At the paint day students, friends, and family came together to paint. The mural is titled “WE KNOW BETTER,” and reflects the student’s understanding of targeted tobacco advertising, and the risk of cancer associated with smoking.
